Ban Treaty Week of Action 10th – 17th Feb

The United Nations negotiations in 2017 for a Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty, supported by a huge majority of the world’s governments start in March in New York. The UK Government say they want multilateral disarmament, but they won’t take part. The Scottish Parliament would support the treaty, but is misrepresented by the UK. The international campaign, ICAN, has supported ordinary people across the world as well as at the UN to get the ban treaty this far.

ICAN calls for a global Week of Action from 10th to 17th Feb and you can join in. Everyone should know about the ban, but the UK media are not reporting it so far, so it is up to us. There is now a Scottish working group to support activity here, and provide information and resources. We hope you will join in. Add the Ban twibbon to your profile.

We need help during the worldwide week of action to to get governments and media to pay attention to the negotiations for a global ban.Can you help? We have a leaflet which explains the Ban Treaty story so far and postcards and we want to get them into the hands of as many people as possible. They be picked up from Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre or the SCND office in Glasgow, or we can mail some out to you if that’s needed. (just phone the SCND office to order some)

A media group will do national press work during the week of action and please ask if you need help with the really valuable local media work contacting local papers and radio. Scrap Trident will be covering the activities on social media all week so we need people to take – and tweet and post – photos and also to share them with to the Scrap Trident Facebook, Twitter and other platforms.

Please let us know if you are willing to be part of this and set up a high street stall (a card table and a couple of people in your local high street can be effective) after work one evening or on the Saturday morning. If you can help, is there a contact e-mail and/or phone number we can help publicise?
We look forward to hearing from you when we will get back to you with more information.

Love from

As well or instead of a street stall, here are some other ideas for the Week of Action

  • You could ask to speak at an event or meeting – use the briefing to guide what you say – and hand out the leaflets and postcards at the end.
  • Collect statements from people who support the ban treaty, on paper or video, and post the results!
  • Ask people to contact their MSP or MP to ask the UK Government how it will represent the Scottish view.
  • Pledge cash to help make sure that Scottish civil society representatives can go to the June meeting in New York and speak up for us.

Most importantly, tell us what you are doing and send pictures so we can share with the world and make a big splash about the GLOBAL NUCLEAR WEAPONS BAN TREATY that the media and the UK Government can’t ignore.
Please get in touch if you’d like to help,

The goal of the negotiations is “a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons, leading towards their total elimination”. This new international agreement will place nuclear weapons on the same legal footing as other weapons of mass destruction, which have long been outlawed.
The negotiations will take place at UN headquarters in New York from 27 to 31 March and from 15 June to 7 July 2017
