Ask your MSP to support Motion S5M-01986
Right now the United Nations First Committee is debating the setting up of a conference next year to negotiate a nuclear weapons ban treaty. In spite of the nuclear weapons states including the UK putting pressure on non nuclear states more and more are speaking up to co-sponsor the resolution.  There will be a vote on it at the end of the month and campaigners and it looks likely to pass.

Meanwhile Alison Johnstone MSP has tabled a motion at the Scottish Parliament in support of this huge leap forward towards a nuclear free world. Please contact your MSPs and ask them to support this motion.

Motion S5M-01986: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party, Date Lodged: 13/10/2016
Time for a Nuclear Weapon-free World
That the Parliament welcomes the recommendation from the UN Security Council’s Open-Ended Working Group on Nuclear Disarmament (OEWG) calling for a UN conference in 2017 to negotiate a treaty to ban nuclear weapons and lead to their complete elimination; deeply regrets the UK’s absence from the OEWG’s talks; considers that the Parliament and citizens of Scotland have stood against the possession of nuclear weapons, including opposing the recent Trident renewal; regrets that Scotland is unable to participate in the OEWG’s negotiations; supports action by states such as Ireland, Austria, South Africa, Nigeria and New Zealand to submit an additional supporting resolution to the First Committee of the UN, and recognises that the Scottish Government’s efforts to dissuade the UK Government from supporting Trident are in line with the majority of states participating in the OEWG.
